Lu's Dec. 15, 2001, gig at Infusions (McKinney, Texas) has been rescheduled for Dec. 8 due to another gig which bumped Infusions back to Dec. 8.

DECKER by Jim Gatewood Lu Mitchell has been comissioned to write a ballad for Jim Gatewood's DECKER, a book about the legendary Texas Sheriff Bill Decker. It cronicles the hoods and criminals who used to hang out in West Dallas in the 1920's and '30's -- Bonnie and Clyde and all sorts of Texas desperados. Anyway, the author has also written a screen play, and he wanted a ballad for it. Naturally, Lu Mitchell came up with a pretty good one which may one day take its rightful place next to the ballads about Sam Bass, Jesse James, and the "we rob banks" gang, aka "Bonnie and Clyde."

Lu's son, Sean Mitchell, is headed to NYC to pick up the ASCAP award for his Dave Alvin story that ran in the LA Times early this year. Lu says, "I am so happy for him. He is such a good writer and it means a lot to him to know that someone notices."

Summertime 2001

On Tuesday, July 24, Lu Mitchell will meet with Ron Shipman and a small circle of friends to tape an evening of reminiscing about nights at Dallas' legendary Rubaiyat. Those present will tell and hear stories about Cisco Houston, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rambling Jack Elliott , Michael Martin Murphy and many others. As one of the founding members of The Dallas Folk Music Society, Lu Mitchell is well known for her satirical songs of great social and political import as well as for her wonderful ways with traditional words and music. After a thirty-year career as a secretary for a major corporation, Lu finds herself much happier as a full time folksinger. She's a great lady, and she puts on a good show, with or without her band, Catch 23.

Lu Mitchell & Catch 23 will help launch "Infusions" (Coffee House with Original Art), on the square in downtown McKinney, Texas, on Saturday, June 30, from 8 - 11 PM. Although "Infusions" has no sound system or lights or money for a guarantee , Lu and the band have agreed to help launch this new folk music venue. Lu says, "The building is beautiful, and we'll work with a 'tip jar' and I am more than happy to do this. I want to see them succeed." Phone 972-542-6204 for more information.

Lu has been asked to perform at a symposium at Richland College (Dallas) as part of promotion of their Emeritus Program (seniors retrning to school). It's free and the featured speaker will be Judith Viorst. Also on the program will be Steve Blow and Rosemary Rumbley. It's an all day thing, and we'lI post more details later. The date is August 20, 2001.

Lu's chigger song goes to ChiggerFest 2001! This news comes in from Elaine Hatch who heard Paul & Win Grace of Columbia, MO, perform Lu's chigger song at a recent folk meet. Elaine's Girl Scout Council puts on a ChiggerFest in the summer, where they do chigger crafts, games, stories, and even crown a Chigger Queen, and now they want to add Lu's "Chiggers" to the program. If you don't know what a chigger is, we hope you never do! Worse than East Texas mosquitoes and you get no chance to swat 'em!

It's only just begun ... Lu's new "Dubyah" song! We're all just waiting around for the update on this one!!!

Another update. My band Catch-23 and I will be performing at Poor David's Pub (Dallas) on Friday, June 4....opening for Doris Daze CD Release show. Don't know if you've ever seen this all-girl rock band (but you can understand the lyrics). They are great; and I am their number one fan.         Lu

Would you believe it, Drake was about ready to transfer my web page to my computer, when his car pooped out. It will take $2000 to fix it minimally; and $5000 to fix it completely. Linda is trying to get a real job to help. Right now they are a one-car family....and my site is now a lower priority.

Somehow things will get worked out, but this is my way of saying it may take a bit longer to make the transition.

The interview with Gabrielle (recorded April 29, at KERA 90.1 FM/Dallas/Ft. Worth/DEEP IN THE ARTS -- Broadcast Sunday evenings at 5:00 p.m.) went reasonably well. I was a bit nervous because the spectre of Jeff Luchsinger hung over my head like a cloud and caused me to be nervous. Gabrielle never asked me where my CD's could be bought. I just timidly answered the questions she asked. ......However, Gabrielle and her producer said it was a great session. Maybe they were just being nice. I will let you know soon when it will be aired; and I hope I did ok.

The Pocket Sandwich Theatre show with Alex Burton will be Wed., June 16. Bruce Ayers, a storyteller will do a guest spot. And my sweet true love, Bill Smith, will do a duet with me -- "I Remember It Well" -- from GIGI.

I received a call from a young man who works for NOW (National Organization for Women) in Washington, D.C. He happened upon my music somewhere and thinks I should be performing for the NOW organization at their conventions, etc. I sent him a press kit.

Bill and I will join the Ackermans in Cork, Ireland, on July 20 for a series of gigs. I am terribly excited about this. I have a feeling the Irish will like my songs.

Let's keep in touch. Bear with me for being slow. I feel I have a tiger by the tail.

Love,

Lu
