UNCLE CALVIN'S COFFEEHOUSEIt was Trey Hammond's idea to have a coffeehouse in the Fellowship Hall of Dallas' Northpark Presbyterian Church back in 1982. He wanted a place young people could go where there was a smoke-free, alcohol-free environment. He loved folk music and started calling people like Ann Armstrong, Emilie Aronson, Wayne Greene, and me. We brought our own sound systems when we played, and the admission price was $1.00. People passed the word around about the existence of Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse and the audience went from 25 to 150. Trey Hammond, along with his assistant Ed Gonsalus, kept it going until Trey got transferred to another church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After Ed Gonsalus came Michael Terry, who brought the venue along to its present state. Those of us locals who played there every six weeks now get a booking about once every three years... ABOUT LU'S UPCOMING SHOW AT UNCLE CALVIN'S ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2006 We're pulling out the stops for my September 15th show at Uncle Calvin's. It will probably be my last gig there, since Michael Terry gives local talent a show only every three or four years. Just think, I started playing Uncle Calvin's when it started in 1982. This is quite an anniversary for me. So...I want to fill that place. We have made fans (card stock with a tongue depressor) in every conceivable color for the event. They're really cute...I'll send out postcards, of course. I guess Calvin's does its own promoting. Wish I could get on one of the local talk shows. I'll be trying...
